What Are the Negative Consequences of Gambling Addiction?

Gambling is the habitual wagering of something of worth or currency on an uncertain occasion with an uncertain result, with the intention of winning either money or goods. The word “gambling” first appears in the English language in the 1570s, from the French word “gamble” meaning to 먹튀검증 strive, as in to fight off or put out. Later the meaning of the word changed to “the game of chance” due to the popularity of card and board games like chess, baccarat, and blackjack. Today the word “gambling” refers generally to any form of wagering, including sports betting, commodity markets, and Forex trading. Gambling therefore requires three factors exist: risk, consideration, and a reward.

The History of Gambling

The history of gambling can be traced back to the card game, “chop-chop.” This card game was very popular in Great Britain before the advent of the Industrial Revolution. In the early days gambling was considered a form of high stakes gambling. As time passed, different techniques were developed to make gambling more rational and professional. First, the spread of gambling to the United States in the late nineteenth century marked the beginning of professional gambling, which has become ever more integrated into the fabric of American society.

Betting on sporting events became the catalyst for professional gambling when professional gamblers travelled to the Caribbean, the Italian island region, and the other parts of Europe to engage in betting on sporting events. The growth of professional gambling in the United States can be traced back to the coincidental appearance in 1875 of the first State-of-The-Art bookmaker, Charles “Mask” Lewis Sr., who began what has become known as the Lewis System. This system enabled a bettor to enter bets from a single source, instead of having to disperse funds from multiple sources. The system also facilitated smaller stakes gambling, which made it easier for the small player to participate in the game. Later, the same system was adopted by the National Association for Professional gamblers (NAPG), which today is known as the Betting Commission.

National Association For Professional Gambling

The National Association for Professional Gambling (NAPG) quickly made gambling and betting exchanges illegal, due to fears that the widespread adoption of the Lewis System would create a monopoly in the lotteries, thus denying the minority groups of the population access to betting exchange opportunities. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill, which soon became a national law, banning the implementation of electronic gambling. The ban did not prevent the expansion of the electronic wagering industry, however, and the Lottery Commission and NAPG remained involved in promoting lotteries throughout the United States, sometimes interfering with state legislation, in an attempt to maintain control of the situation. In addition, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a law, which allowed for the broadcasting of gambling infomercials.

In response to the growing concerns surrounding online gambling, the US House of Representatives passed the Stop Gambling Act of 2021, which prohibits the transfer of money from one casino system to another. This law also allows state governments to regulate online gaming. Today, you are more likely to hear about the “three strikes and you are out” provision of this law than any other piece of legislation. The three strikes provision states that if you gamble on more than three establishments that are owned or operated by the same person or business, you will be subjected to criminal prosecution. This means that if you gamble at a site owned by a friend, acquaintance or employee, you could be facing a possible sentence of ten years in prison. While many critics have criticized the provision for its fear-inducing nature, it has been repeatedly used in order to protect smaller Internet gambling sites from larger ones, which offer legal grey areas.

Some may argue that a person has the right to gamble as he or she wishes, regardless of the repercussions that might occur should they choose to gamble unethically or irresponsibly. The problem with this line of thinking is that a person does not have a right to gamble as he or she wishes if that person is involved in conduct that is considered to be immoral by the vast majority of Americans – especially when that person plays for money. Gambling, like other types of entrepreneurship, can often times be viewed as a business, and as such, some laws will be applied to the company as a whole rather than an individual aspect. Should a gambler be involved in illegal conduct, whether through the use of stolen credit card information or payment processing information, the individual may actually be charged with a felony – even though gambling is typically considered to be a private activity.

If you or someone you know suffers from a gambling problem, it is important to address the issue before it gets out of control. There are professional gamblers that can help you overcome your gambling addiction, and there are many self-help programs available that address the addiction to gambling. When starting a self-help program, it is important to remember that many of the habits that are formed during the course of gambling addiction are very difficult to break on one’s own. Although the desire for a large amount of gambling winnings is strong, breaking the addiction is often times very difficult for most people. It is therefore advisable to consult with a reputable gambling addiction counselor or therapist to help you recognize your personal gambling problem and seek help.
